Session 1 - Eradicating social exclusion

How can the use of technology help to reach learners who would otherwise not have the opportunity to gain new skills? How does it motivate and engage learners in some of the most challenging of circumstances to set themselves new goals? This session set out to share examples of how providers have successfully overcome barriers to learning, using technology.

Session 2 - Leading new collaboration within the IT industry to benefit learners

Home access programmes represent a great opportunity for the wider technology industry to successfully engage with low income families - a ‘hard to reach’ market sector. This innovation exchange considered both the impact and the role industry has played in the success of a Home Access programme.

Session 3 - Transforming lives in disadvantaged communities

In the UK and US, educational bodies are exploiting technology to transform lives and whole communities seem to be profiting. Clear economic advantage is evident from increasing access to technology at home and this session explored these issues in more detail. Participants also were able to discuss the impact technology is having on the disadvantaged.

Session 4 - Using technology to stimulate economic development in countries with limited infrastructure

This session provided an opportunity for those in challenging circumstances to explore the ways in which technology has been used to stimulate economic development and changes in countries with limited infrastructure. Participants were encouraged to bring to this session, examples of implementations which have used a technology solution to address a challenge.

Session 5 - A collaborative model of innovative and inclusive education

Michigan has one of the highest drop out and unemployment rates in the USA, exacerbated by deep recession and the decline of the car industry. The State of Michigan recognised the need to rethink some of their existing policies. This session allowed participants to explore the Michigan model and look at ways technology is helping to engage young adults at-risk in this current economic crisis.

Session 6 - Mastering the moment: Strategic technology leadership during an economic crisis

Tough economic times often make educators and policy makers question if we can afford to invest in ICT. Yet, tough fiscal times are also when innovation becomes a necessity. What should policy and education leaders do to rethink 21st century education? What is the leaders role in creating a culture and environment for change in an economic crisis? During this session, participants enjoyed an interactive conversation about enabling the future with wise ICT policy and leadership.

Session 7 - Re-imagining learning for the health service workforce

The NHS is the world’s biggest employer after Indian Rail and the Chinese Army with over 1.3 million staff. One of the major challenges faced by the NHS is its ageing workforce and the need to re-imagine what learning looks like for healthcare staff where patient care is a priority and continuing professional/personal development a critical component. This session explored the challenges of re-imagining learning in health.

Session 8 - Delivering the UNICEF rights of the child for all learners

How do we make sure that learners with disabilities are able to exploit new technologies to access meaningful education and enhance their life chances? Partipants came and shared with others how they thought that governments, industry and learning establishments can, or already are, planning for the future needs of these learners.

Session 9 - How can technology assist societies to recover and regenerate after economic change, demographic disruption and conflict?

This session aimed to generate a meaningful conversation and lively debate amongst participants about how to maximize the potential of current and emerging technologies to support individual and collective efforts to recover, regenerate and renew following economic upheaval, demographic disruption and/or social and political conflicts.

Session 10 - Transformation and change – harnessing technology to deliver socio and economic recovery

The UK faces a huge challenge to increase the skills of its workforce over the next decade and learndirect is committed to playing a crucial part in delivering the vision of a higher skilled nation through the use of digital technology. This session gave participants a flavour of the work it is doing to pilot and test a new approach to bring learning and technology together to benefit learners, businesses and the UK economy.

Session 11 - How are mobile technologies being used to transform teaching and learning within institutions and in the workplace?

This hands on exchange allowed participants to try some of the technologies and materials being used by colleges and schools involved in MoLeNET, to learn about the work of MoLeNET projects, their impact on teaching and learning and to debate mobile learning trends, opportunities and challenges.

Session 12 - Using education as a focus for stimulating economic growth

This session focussed on education transformation programmes that have delivered positive results in Portugal, Finland, and Australia. Participants learnt how education programmes benefit economic growth, discussed the relative merits of each programme and explored successful public private partnerships.

Session 1 - A Euro Moodle?

During 2007 and 2009, five European partners took part in a unique project to collaborate electronically and share resources. This highly successful project has promoted a variety of innovative uses of technology and this flex session showed some of the ways that technology was utilised both in the management of the project and the delivery of learning.

Session 2 - Parental reporting

Parental engagement in children’s learning has the greatest impact on achievement at school. This flex session featured school leaders describing how the move towards online reporting is being managed and what they are doing to ensure that the learner information provided to parents is appropriate, timely and meaningful.

Session 3 - Digital education technologies for economic growth

As the world begins to emerge from a global recession, the link between education reform and economic growth is increasingly obvious - The effective use of digital education technologies goes a long way towards fulfilling the goal of creating a self-aware, socially responsible and technically literate workforce. This flex session argued that the key focus of transformative education through technology should not be on the machinery and software, but on creating the governmental, professional and educational structures needed to make sure projects are scalable and sustainable.

Session 4 - The three 'U's

Digital content offers a means of reducing overall content expenditure and providing a more rich and interactive learning experience. However, investments in the design and development of software systems to support the discovery and use of digital learning content have been hampered by a lack of interoperability between the creators of content and the developers of software systems to deliver content. This flex session discussed in detail the three 'U's - universal access for all educators and learners in a given system; unified digital content supply for both OERs and commercial content and utility billing for content.

Session 5 - Strategic use of e-portfolios

Following on from winning the BECTA award in 2008 Lifetime demonstrated its enhanced Version 4 Eportfolio.

Session 1 - The learning society

Learning is fundamental to the progress of humanity – for economic prosperity, social wellbeing, personal fulfilment and a sustainable planet. As learning becomes more and more critical to every aspect of our global society, how do we respond?

Session 2 - The school of clouds potential

This extended spotlight session explored the potential of cloud computing and challenged participants to consider the following hypothesis: There will always be people in the world who are willing to mediate over the Internet, for learning for, say, one hour a week, with no remuneration. There are a wide range of groups of adults who would benefit from learning (for entrepreneurship or personal or professional development) from questions through the internet, who may benefit from support from an e-mediator. Through this spotlight session, participants were asked to contribute to the cloud debate.

A spotlight session delivered by Anthony J Mullen, The Council of Chief State School Officers National Teacher of the Year, 2009.

Session 1 - How do we find best practice?

Are award schemes the best way of identifying excellent practice with technology? Are there any other ways that better help to find and share great examples? This innovation exchange set out to debate if award schemes really are worth using, as a way of identifying and sharing good practice with technology.

Session 2 - How can we make sure there are effective ICT services for learners?

The complexity of ICT is growing and emerging models provide a real challenge for institutions to build reliable and sustainable systems for learners. This session allowed participants to explore the merits of different ICT managed services.

Session 3 - The impact of remixing and mashups on copyrighted education resources

Widespread fast internet access has created the perfect distribution medium for educational resources. During this exchange participants reviewed some of the copyright issues around digital learning resources including file sharing, piracy and licences.

Session 4 - Embedding best practice in public sector programme delivery

Both England and the US have launched a wealth of initiatives to make the best use of technology in education and public sector delivery including at home. This session provided an opportunity to discuss how educational bodies can take advantage of technology to consider customers and form cross-government links, in uncertain economic times.

Session 5 - Data driven school transformation

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust works with school leaders to positively shape policy on the use of examination performance data and how this is used to judge the effectiveness of schools. This session explored the merits of the Data Enabler programme and the work done in the state of Colorado on data for learning transformation.

Session 6 - Children's online safety - Who's responsibility is it anyway?

The aim of this session will be to explore the responsibilities of those involved in the protection of children online – industry, parents, children, educators. How much can we educate children to stay safe? How much of their safety is the responsibility of those who design and manage the environments that they operate in?

Session 7 - How can technology enhance student learning experiences in the higher education sector?

The UK Higher Education (HE) sector is very diverse, devolved and autonomous. Achieving change at a sector-wide level through national organisations presents a number of challenges and a need to work with different stakeholders. This session provided participants with an opportunity to learn how change is being driven in UK universities and look at ways that technology can be exploited in their own countries, to enhance student learning experiences.

Session 8 - Critical success scheme for step-change in e-learning – CRISSSCEL

This innovation exchange session allowed participants to explore the critical success factors and key success factors of the Re.ViCa project.

Session 9 - Evidenced based leadership: It’s the little things that count

There is a growing interest by school leaders throughout the world to differentiate and hold themselves accountable by benchmarking against international measures of achievement like school, state and national benchmarks. During this session participants looked at successful international benchmarking strategies and shared evidence and real benchmarking examples of what works for learners in an educational context.

Session 10 - Embedding innovation in the FE and skills sector

How can innovation in learning with technology be systematically embedded across such a complex web of training providers? This innovation exchange provided an opportunity for participants to learn about the approaches being taken, discuss issues of common concern with colleagues who are closely involved in different aspects and share insights from their own national perspectives.

Session 11 - What is the place of technology in research-led teaching?

Digital technologies are having a huge impact on the way research is done and the type of research question that can be addressed. They are also opening up the possibility of involving a broader spectrum of participants in the research process, including students and even the general public. This session showcased different ways in which the use of digital technologies has enabled innovative teaching methods in different disciplines.

Session 12 - Moving from pilot to policy: Policy issues and impact for new assessments

In this session Dr Linda Darling-Hammond from Stanford University presented issues around moving from pilot to policy when it comes to assessing 21st century skills. Participants were invited to share successful examples of taking good ideas to scale.

Session 1 - Managing e-safety strategies

During this session Ruth Hammond, Manager - Safeguarding Programmes set out the very simple model which underpins the strategy for all Becta’s advice and guidance around e-safety.

Session 2 - Supporting learners through assistive technologies

During this flex session, Smartlab illustrated the use of assistive technologies now available to support a range of specific learning needs.

Session 3 - The 'So What' factor

Since 2003 the Training Development Agency (TDA) for schools has offered support for ICT in teacher training through annual funding rounds. But so what? During this flex session, participants heard from the University of Wolverhampton who evaluated the initiative and shared what impact TDA's funding has had on teacher training.

Session 4 - What are the strategies for ICT in European primary schools and what does research tell us about their impact?

This flex session was delivered by European Schoolnet and explored the results of 'STEPS' a landmark study commissioned to discover the impact of technology in primary schools across Europe. During the session participants found out more about the range of national ICT strategies adopted by different countries and discovered the impact they have had on learners, teachers and future development perspectives.

Session 5 - Harnessing Technology in the Further education and skills sector

Becta is working with partners to support learning providers in developing an e-confident workforce. By March 2012 Becta wants to be able to measure performance in the deployment of technology in England in comparison with that of other European countries. During this session, participants found out more about Becta's approach to benchmarking and learnt more about the implementation plan adopted by the UK to drive the use of learning technologies in the further education and skills sector.

Session 6 - EPICT - What's it all about?

During this session participants found out more about The European Pedagogical ICT Licence (EPICT) - an attempt to create a comprehensive international standard for the continued professional development of teachers in the pedagogical use of ICT in education. Currently it is probably the only CPD concept for teachers focussed on the integration of ICT that has been adopted by organisations in a range of countries including Australia, Iceland, Uganda and Norway.

Session 7 - Improving performance through the self review framework

During this flex session, participants found out more about the SRF (Self Review Framework), a tool developed in the UK allowing schools to review their own use of ICT for learning and to identify steps to improve performance.

Session 8 - Technology focused CPD training opportunities for Further education and skills

This session saw the launch of a new national online system of technology focused CPD training opportunities. During this flex session participants were able to learn more about the online system, its benefits and potential impact of CPD programmes to support teaching, learning and business processes.

Session 9 - ICT in Slovak Education

This flex session provided participants with an insight into how technology has and will be integrated into Slovakia's education system. There were also opportunities for participants to ask presenters questions about Slovakia's national ICT strategy during the session.

Session 1 - What are students’ views about learning with technology and how can we use these to inform preparations for future learning?

This session posed questions for system and educational leaders to discuss and focus on how students’ views of learning with technology can be collected and used to influence future institutional and national policies.

Session 2 - Helping young people make the most of their use of technology

Young people increasingly use technologies, especially the Internet, as a matter of course in their lives, and learning. How can we help them take advantage of this usage to benefit their learning whether in school or in the home? How can innovation with technology be strategically enabled?

Session 3 - Future socio-technical change and its implications for education

How do we know which future to prepare for? How do changes in society and technology affect each other? This session provided an opportunity to discuss emerging social, technological and educational trends, and the ways in which practice and policy will need to respond and prepare for them.

Session 4 - How effectively are we preparing the next generation of learners?

Technology is a part of young people’s everyday life in many parts of the world and they are highly confident with a wide range of technology. Is there an assumption that this confidence is the same as competence? How do we know that learners are using the technology effectively? During the session, participants were asked to share their views on learner capability.

Session 5 - ICT and environmental sustainability: Striking the balance

Environmental policies are increasingly important to governments worldwide, yet global carbon emissions from IT are equivalent to aviation and widespread use of ICT creates other waste, making teachers and learners polluters. Participants were invited to develop conclusions on the best practical steps to achieve a balance between ICT and environmental sustainability.

Session 6 - On the horizon: Next generation learning

Technology and learning are strongly linked but the debate surrounding how we generate new digital skills and creativity for the future is too limited and simplistic. This innovation exchange brought together the leading minds from the digital industries with the best from education, to discuss and debate the challenges we collectively face and consider potential ways forward.

Session 7 - Are we preparing for the economies and learner opportunities of the future? Are we shaping technology and its use appropriately?

Within this session, panelists presented a comprehensive framework for 21st Century Learning and Teaching and participants were able to consider and identify the best approaches to re-imagine education and technology globally.

Session 8 - Re-imagining professional development for the education workforce of the 21st century

Whilst there is widespread recognition of the needs of a 21st century learner in a global economy, there is perhaps less consensus on the approaches that will help develop the education workforce required to enable this. This session explored ways that technology can help to develop an education workforce for the 21st century.

Session 9 - The new economics of free in higher education

Higher Education faces a growing challenge from the increasing number of freely accessible educational resources coupled with free Web 2.0 social networking services that can support aspects of learning. These developments narrow the gap between formal and informal education and raise the spectre of learners opting to educate themselves for free rather than paying fees to study formally. In this session participants explored the new economics of free education in the higher education sector.

Session 10 - Access all areas

This session debated the dichotomy surrounding the need to protect children and young people whilst at the same time encouraging them to reap the benefits of new digital technologies.

Session 11 - 21st century skills, what are they and how can they be learned and assessed for excellent performance?

ATC21s is a partnership that brings together individuals from over 60 research institutions, 6 founding countries and 3 multinational corporations to build strategies that focus on the conditions of success for the next generation of assessment. This session focussed on the summaries of the white papers developed for four areas: 21st Century Skills, Methodological Issues, Technological Issues, Classroom Learning Environments and Formative Evaluations. During the session, participants were able to share thoughts on the strategies presented.

Session 12 - How can our programmes enable adult learners to make sense of change, adapt to change and to shape change?

The session focussed on the area of lifelong learning and address the question: How can our programmes enable learners to make sense of change, adapt to change and to shape change? The session was informed by scenarios produced for the Inquiry into Future of Lifelong Learning.

Session 1 - Turning kids on

Engaging young people and delivering effective learning opportunities is the challenge for all educators. For over two years, lead practitioners in the UK have been developing approaches that exploit the multimedia and interactive features of devices such as the Play Station Portable (PSP). The purpose of this flex session was to share with educators the experiences and good practice that have been developed whilst using mobile devices to facilitate learning in a very wide range of subjects.

Session 7 - Investing where it matters

The flex session explored investments in technology.

Session 2 - A learning revolution for adults?

In March 2009 the government launched a ‘Learning Revolution’ policy document setting out a vision for the future of non accredited learning for adults. This flex session drawed on NIACE’s work on the Learning Revolution White Paper including the management of Transformation Projects. It also referenced the work of Becta in this area and the partnership work between NIACE and Becta on the development of training resources for staff and volunteers.

Session 3 - Understanding technology usage and ICT requirements of next generation learners

This flex session examined student ownership, usage and expectations of ICT and how these are influenced by student characteristics, such as age, gender, nationality, socioeconomic background, place of residence, and prior levels of ICT experience.

Session 4 - Supporting global collaboration through virtual learning platforms

This session provided participants with an insight into the strategic use of open source based technology to enhance and develop the collaboration of clusters of secondary schools and partner authorities in East Asia.

Session 5 - Restoring teacher education

This flex session demonstrated how a partnership across Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Spain, funded by European Union funding, has set out to create a culture and resource for teachers enabling the sharing of digital resources and ideas about effective pedagogic methods.

Session 6 - ICT devices for student centred learning

This session focussed on how technology and changes to the physical classroom environment is being used in Denmark to transform the learning experiences from one which is passive and boring to one which is interactive and engaging.

There was also a short speech delivered by Philip Goodwin, Global Programme Leader, Creative and Knowledge Economy, British Council and Vernon Coaker MP, Minister of State for Schools and Learners at the Department for Children, Schools and Families hosted the dinner. Entertainment was provided by St Bede’s, Redhill, a Specialist Music College, under the direction of James Wood, Head of Music Specialism.
